Geothermal Exploration in Montserrat, Caribbean

Montserrat is located in the Caribbean and, as with many of the islands of the Caribbean Lesser Antilles is volcanic in origin. As a result, many of the islands have the potential for geothermal electrical power generation. EGS Inc.was awarded the contract by Government of Montserrat in June 2009 to perform geothermal exploration studies on the island. As the first stage of the exploration, EGS completed detailed geological and tectonic studies to identify the major structures within the area, using remote sensing data acquired from various international and Montserrat-based sources. To learn more about the presence and characteristics of a potential geothermal resource, EGS and the Institute of Earth Science and Engineering at the University of Auckland, New Zealand (IESE) applied geophysical tools which measure physical characteristics of subsurface rocks. The magnetotelluric (MT) method permits to measure this parameter for materials at relatively great depth (up to 10 kilometers). Differences in the recorded signal are used to estimate subsurface distribution of electrical resistivity. Finally, A geochemical study, consisting in sampling and analyzing all accessible springs, water supply wells and monitoring wells in central Montserrat was carried out by EGS and ThermoChem in the summer of 2009.
